There are just as many different people who do Reiki as there are reasons for how we have all found Reiki. Children can easily be drawn to Reiki because of their own pure light and innocence making them such wonderful and clear channels of universal energy. Nurses often find Reiki as a way to comfort and assist their patients with pain and healing. Massage therapists may hear of Reiki while attending school; they are sometimes offered information about alternative/complimentary modalities during training. Those who are interested in naturopathy and ‘natural’ forms of healing have great access and experience with alternative and complimentary choices to Western medicine. My personal Reiki story involves a history of family members with extraordinary healing gifts as well as myself being diagnosed with cancer in 2005.

My grandmother survived many years of cancer diagnoses, surprising much of the medical community. There were few explanations as to how she recovered and rebounded time and time again. As she grew older, my brother was often seen sitting with her while he gently placed his hands on her arms. They looked as if in a trance, suspended together in a special, unexplainable moment in time. No one ever asked what was happening, why it always made my grandmother appear as if she felt so peaceful after this time with my brother.

After my grandma passed away, my brother would often tell me about stories he would experience going to healing circles, being asked to attend healing ceremonies, having people approach him about interviews for magazines. It terrified him to the point of denying his gifts so he ‘turned off’ this beautiful channel to his spiritual connection.

He did return to it momentarily when I was diagnosed with Melanoma in August of 2005. My family was an amazing support system throughout the whole process, from original diagnosis to the first operation, to the next test revealing it had traveled to my lymph nodes…..My brother would tell me that with my picture he would send me healing and white light. Wanting to also help myself, I started a search for what I could do. That is when Reiki appeared in the book store and on my computer screen. There were other words, other phrases, other descriptions of healing modalities. Reiki was what resonated with my soul and my search for an answer was a success. It was also the beginning of a new life filled with light, love, healing, and, most importantly, community.

Following two operations, I was to take a form of chemotherapy for exactly twelve months. The effects could have caused me to have to temporarily stop working or living a normal life. Patients are expected to have very little, if any, energy or ability to find their way out of bed. I made sure to have many Reiki treatments that year and did not miss a day of work. I may have missed a few moon rises going to bed early but never missed a sunrise. The oncologist was admittedly surprised and baffled by the lack of negative effects the drug was having on my physical body. She was not convinced that it was the Reiki I told her about, but after each blood test revealing very little increase of my white blood cells, I was more convinced of what and why.

I continued my Reiki appointments and also decided to learn Reiki to heal myself and to assist others also experiencing a journey involving cancer or other illnesses. It has become a new goal in my life to receive Reiki on a regular basis and to reach out, and call out, to the planet at large about the truly amazing benefits that this energy can provide.

I now rent space on the weekends so that I can offer individual Reiki sessions for those who are interested in Reiki Energy Healing as a compliment to all and any other modalities they may be receiving for healing, balance, and overall wellness. For those who desire to learn Reiki as a self-healing tool or to offer Reiki to others, I also arrange classes for each level of Reiki training. I am a Reiki Master who has been trained by a Teacher of the lineage connected to William Rand of the International Center for Reiki Training. My path continues as I grow and learn more and more about Reiki, spirituality, trust, and the power to heal myself on a daily basis.
